Classical Civilisation is the study of the culture, history and thoughts of the civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome.  It is one of the most varied and interdisciplinary of all subjects.  Featuring a wide range of options, the course offers the opportunity to study the literature, history, philosophy (both ancient and modern) and archaeology of the Greek and Roman Mediterranean.

Whether you want to learn about our origins and history, read literature, explore the effect of the past on the present, or learn to apply science to the arts, Classical Civilisation has something for everyone.  The study of Classical Civilisation requires students to develop the analytical skills needed to understand and engage in disciplines such as art appreciation and textual criticism.  The subject’s involvement with a range of disciplines such as history, philosophy and art criticism, makes it constantly fresh and challenging and encourages mental versatility.

The Classics Department gives all students the opportunity to become acquainted with both the language and culture of ancient Rome through the study of Latin from Year 8 and the fascinating and informative world of the ancient civilisations of the Roman and Greeks through the study of Classical Civilisations at A Level.

Why study Latin?

Latin offers the opportunity to study the language and literature of Ancient Rome, reading the works of famous authors such as Virgil, Ovid, Cicero and Tacitus.  You experience elements of the culture, language and social and political life of the Roman civilisation which has inspired many later generations.  As well as being exciting and inspiring, this course helps you develop analytical skills and intellectual flexibility which will be useful in a wide range of jobs or further study.
