Course Outline – English

Home / Course Outline – English

English is a fascinating subject. Students are introduced to a wide range of literature ranging from Chaucer and Shakespeare to Philip Pullman and writing from a range of different cultures. We celebrate students’ own writing and we encourage the exploration of language used all around us in everyday situations.  In Years 7-9 We aim to help students develop an appreciation and love of reading, and read increasingly challenging material independently through: reading a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, including in particular, whole books, short stories, poems and plays with a wide coverage of genres, historical periods, forms and authors. The range will include high-quality works from:

  • English literature, both pre-1914 and contemporary, including prose, poetry and drama
  • Shakespeare
  • World literature

We guide our students to choose and read books independently for challenge, interest and enjoyment. In Years 7 and 8, all our students take part in our Accelerated Reader scheme and have one library lesson per fortnight.
